Fight hunger on your lunch break

In 2009, my oldest son graduated from high school. Like many parents, I had become great friends with other moms through his school and extra-curricular activities, and wanted to stay connected with them even though we no longer had kids in school together. That’s how I found Meals on Wheels. I started delivering meals with my friend Kathy every other week, using the time to catch up, compare notes on our newly-enrolled college students and do something great for our community. We delivered lunches and then we had lunch together. We kept our routine for several years and some things never changed―I drove, she navigated, and we laughed and talked together. But one thing that was constantly changing was our route. We signed up to be “floaters”, taking any available route that Meals on Wheels needed filled. We visited corners of Greenville County that we’d never seen before and met so many people in need. Almost ten years later, I am still giving Meals on Wheels an hour every other week. My delivery partner has changed―now my friend Jennifer is navigating―but I am still floating from one route to another, helping where the need is greatest. "Although the geography changes, I’ve found that each and every client benefits from the same thing―a friendly smile and hot meal from someone who cares." ― Kim Greig, Meals on Wheels volunteer and member at Fellowship Greenville.
