Scripture: Galatians 1:6-10
SERMON SUMMARY
We have just begun a new series at FG on the New Testament book of Galatians. The Apostle Paul is reminding those he cares for about the one thing that makes a person right with God and keeps a person right with God…the Gospel. He is reminding them of what they had believed when they first heard him preach…the grace of God in the cross of Christ applied to their lives by His indwelling Spirit.
But soon after Paul had established several church plants in the region of Galatia, a group of teachers called the Judaizers…Jewish Christians who believed that being right with God required faith in Christ PLUS keeping the Mosaic law…showed up singing the song of legalism to these new Gentile believers. Their song was all about what we do or don’t do to gain God’s approval, and their song was quite seducing to the Church in Galatia.
Fast forward to 2024, and many Christ Followers still have a hard time believing that the grace of God through Jesus Christ is sufficient to make them right with God and keep them right with God. Many still attempt to prove themselves worthy by adding Do and do n’t-do lists to their life and, in doing so…find themselves either exhausted and anxious or prideful and arrogant. In Galatians 1:6-10, Paul will get at the heart of our approval addiction and once again remind us that at the heart of modifying grace is people pleasing, which leads to bondage and death, not freedom and life.
